It is rooted in a particular period of time in the past. This genre teaches children to understand their own lives and events of the past connecting them to the future. This book is the story of a young girl who disguised herself as a boy to aboard the armada of little ships to rescue British and French soldiers trapped in France. It is a nostalgic tale portraying the history of the past in a fictional way to engage the young reader.

The illustrator used many different elements of art to engage the reader and bring the reader into the setting of the story. There is the presence of faded colors to present a presence of glow. It shows depth and value on the sea with the ships. The pictures composition flows the readers eyes across the page to view each aspect of the scene. The illustrations are detailed and soft allowing the reader to feel the history of the story through the pages.
